Gemfibrozil 600 mg

Gemfibrozil 600 mg is used to normalize the lipidic composition of blood. Usually gemfibrozil is prescribed after the priority measures, including changes in a diet, weight loss, increased physical activity and control of diabetes (if any) do not result in an improvement of lipidic profile. The principle of its action is to reduce an amount of fat. Reducing cholesterol and triglycerides the risk of heart disease lowers and it helps to prevent heart attacks and strokes. This drug as well helps to prevent diseases of the pancreas (pancreatitis) in patients with very high level of triglycerides in the blood.

Gemfibrozil 600 mg reduces the content of triglycerides and lipoproteins of very low density, increases the content of lipoprotein of high density ("good" cholesterol). It reduces the synthesis of triglycerides in the liver and accelerates removal of cholesterol from the liver and stimulates its excretion in feces.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity, liver and kidney disease (including liver cirrhosis and cholelithiasis), pregnancy

Limitations: Breastfeeding ( to be stopped).

Doses and indications for use: Inside, 30 minutes before a meal, without chewing, take water with the medicine, 600 mg two times per a day (in the morning and evening) or 900 mg 1 time (in the evening). The maximum daily dose - 1500 mg. The treatment course - a few months, if necessary - repeat.

Onset of action: It starts in about a week and it becomes frank after about 4 weeks

Duration of action: The level of triglyceride increases in a few weeks after treatment cessation by Gemfibrozil 600 mg.

Missed doze: Take a missed dose as soon as you remind about it. If it occurs not later than 2 hours before the next dose, skip the missed one and get back to the usual dose schedule of consumption. Do not double the next dose.

Do not stop taking the drug on your own, consult a doctor: the level of triglycerides in blood may rise.

Gemfibrozil safety measures: Over 60 years. Older people have negative reactions more frequently and they are expressed more evident. Driving a vehicle and work with machineries and mechanisms. The application of gemfibrozil 600 mg should not prevent from these activities.

Alcohol: Alcohol consumption should be reduced because it can increase the level of triglyceride

Overdose by gemfibrozil 600 mg: There are no any reports of specific symptoms of an overdose.

What to do: The instructions for urgent action is not required.

With drugs: Some medicines may have negative effects if you take them with gemfibrozil 600 mg, especially it concerns anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin), niacin and all drugs for cholesterol lowering. You may need to decrease the dose of warfarin to prevent bleeding. The combination of gemfibrozil 600 mg with niacin or with other drugs for cholesterol lowering may result in severe myositis (muscle inflammation), in this case protein is exuded damaging the kidneys. In the digestive system: nausea, loss of appetite, dry mouth, heartburn, hyperbilirubinemia, gastralgia, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation, bloating, increased liver transaminase and alkaline phosphatase, cholelithiasis.

In the central and peripheral nervous system: headache, dizziness, extreme tiredness, fainting, paresthesia, drowsiness, depression.

In the CNS and peripheral nervous system: synovitis, muscle weakness, muscle pain, arthralgia, rhabdomyolysis.

In the hematopoietic system: leukopenia, anemia, bone marrow hypoplasia.

In the laboratory parameters: hypokalemia.

Dermatologic reactions: alopecia.

Allergic reactions: dermatitis, skin rash.

Other: alopecia, hypokalemia, impaired vision, reduced potency and / or libido.

In the course of treatment the systematic control over content of lipids in the blood is required (with treatment failure within 3 months this treatment is to cancel). In the course of treatment and after it the special hypolipidemic diet is required to follow. In the course of prolonged treatment the systematic monitoring of peripheral blood and liver function tests are required (with a significant deviation of “liver” functional sample from the standard treatment it to be suspended up to normalization). In the case of missing a dose the next one should be taken as soon as possible, but not double it if it is time for the next dose. When pain in muscles the presence of myositis (including the determination of creatine kinase) should be excluded, in the case of its detection the treatment is canceled. In the case of cholelithiasis the treatment is to cancel.
